The first and second wars took a heavy toll on Grangetown
The First World War
At the unveiling of the war memorial in Grange Gardens in July 1921, one speaker, Dr R J Smith, commented that, ‘Grangetown gave a greater proportion of men to the war than any other ward in Cardiff.’ It is thought, by Grangetown History Society, that 480 men and women were killed in active service by 1921. Men from Grangetown were involved in the Battle of the Somme, the Battle of Ypres and the Battle of Jutland.
Not only did many local men leave their Grangetown homes to join the forces but life at home looked drastically different as well. Women took up more places in the work force as men left to serve in the forces, and people began to struggle financially as the economy was impacted.
The Second World War
The Second World War saw further casualties from Grangetown as again local men signed up to serve in the forces en masse.
There was also a significant number of men from minority backgrounds who joined the forces, many of whom would have been from the Grangetown and Butetown areas. According to researcher Jamie Baker, 685 Arab and 330 Caribbean merchant seamen died serving in the British Merchant Navy, of those 189 and 42 respectively listed their last known address as Cardiff.
Life at home was also altered. Rationing began in January 1940 to ensure that scarce food and commodities could be fairly distributed. Men and women across Cardiff joined the Home Guard to maintain control of the civilian population and ensure that rules such as curfews were followed.
The Blitz
Cardiff was the biggest coal exporting port in Britain at the start of the Second World War. Therefore, it was an obvious target for bombing. On 2 January 1940 over one hundred German planes targeted the city in an air raid that lasted over ten hours and caused significant devastation. The worst hit areas were Grangetown and Riverside.
The attack caused around 70 deaths in Grangetown. Bombs fell on homes and businesses across Grangetown including Ferry Road, Jubilee Street, Clydach Street, Paget Street, Pentrebane Street, Avondale Crescent and North Clive Street.
The worst hit spot was Hollyman’s Bakery where 32 people who had been sheltering in the basement were killed.
Victory in Europe Day
On Tuesday 8 May 1945, crowds gathered outside City Hall in Cardiff to hear the news from London that the Allies had formally accepted Germany’s unconditional surrender marking the end of World War II in Europe.
People across the country took to the streets to celebrate. Bunting was hung, and rations were pooled to create street parties where communities would celebrate the news together.

جنگ عظیم اول
جولائی ۱۹۲۱ میں ایک جنگ کی یادگار کی پرد کشائی کرتے ہوے ایک مہمان نے بیان دیا کہ کارڈف میں گرینج ٹاؤن نے باقی تمام وارڈز سے زیادہ تعداد میں آدمی جنگ کےلیے فراہم کیے. گرینج ٹاؤن تاریخ سوسائٹی کے مطابق ۱۹۲۱ تک فوج میں عہدہ برآ ہونے والے مردوں اور عورتوں کی تعداد ۴۲۱ تک پہنچ گئی تھی. گرینج ٹاؤن سے تعلق رکھنے والے مرد سوم، ایپر اور یوتلنڈ کی جنگوں میں شامل ہوئے تھے
نہ صرف بہت سے مقامی مردوں نے جنگ میں شمولیت کیلئے گھروں کو خیرباد کہا بلکہ گرہستی بھی جنگ سے بری طرح متاثر ہوئی. مردوں کی فوج میں شمولیت کی وجہ سے بہت سی عورتوں کو روزگار کی تلاش شروع کرنا پڑی. اسکے ساتھ ساتھ اقتصادی بدحالی کے سبب لوگوں کو معاشی مسائل کا سامنا کرنا پڑا
اقلیتوں سے تعلق رکھنے والے مرد بھی بکثرت فوج میں بھرتی ہوئے جن میں سے کئی گرینج ٹاؤن اور بیوٹ ٹاؤن سے تھے. محقق جیمی بیکر کے مطابق ۶۸۵ عرب اور ۳۳۰ کیریبئن تجارتی ملاح برطانوی تجارتی بحریہ میں خدمات سرانجام دیتی ہوئے جاں بحق ہوئے جن میں سے بترتیب ۱۸۹ اور ۴۲ نے اپنا رہائشی پتہ کارڈف مذکور کرایا تھا
گھر کی زندگی بھی بدل گئی تھی. قلیل مقدار میں موجود غذا اور دیگر ضروریات کی منصفانہ تقسیم کیلیے راشن بندی کا آغاز جنوری ۱۸۴۰ میں کیا گیا. کارڈف کے مختلف علاقوں سے مر اور عورتیں شہری محافظ دستوں میں بھرتی ہوے تاکہ کرفیو جیسے قواعد کی ظابطہ بندی کی جا سکے
بلیتز
جنگ عظیم دوم کے آغاز میں کارڈف برطانیہ میں کوئلے کی برآمد کی سب سے بڑی بندرگاہ ہونے کی وجہ سے بمباری کا ہدف بنا. ۲ جنوری ۱۹۴۰ میں سو سے زیادہ جرمن طیاروں نے ۱۰ گھنٹے سے زیادہ جاری رہنے والے ہوائی حملے میں کارڈف کو نشانہ بنایا. یہ تمام بلیتز میں سب سے زیادہ تباہ کن حملہ تھا گرینج ٹاؤن اور رورسائیڈ اس میں سب سے زیادہ بری طرح متاثر ہوئے. حملے کے باعث گرینج ٹاؤن میں ۷۰ کے لگ بھگ اموات ہوئیں. فیری روڈ، جوبلی سٹریٹ، کلیداخ سٹریٹ، پیجٹ سٹریٹ، پنٹریبین سٹریٹ، ایون ڈیل سٹریٹ اور شمالی کلیئو سٹریٹ سمیت گرینج ٹاؤن کے گھروں اور کاروباروں پر بم گرائے گئے. سب سے زیادہ تباہ کن حملہ ہولی مین کی بیکری پر کیا گیا جہاں تہہ خانے میں پناہ لینے والے ۳۲ لوگوں کی موت واقع ہو گئی
یورپ میں فتح کا دن
منگل ۸ مئی ۱۹۴۵ کو ایک ہجوم کارڈف سٹی ہال کے باہر لندن سے آنے والی اس خبر کوسننے کیلیے جمع ہوا کہ جرمنی نے بلاشرط ہتھیار ڈال دیے اور یورپ میں جنگ عظیم دوم کا خاتمہ ہو گیا. تمام ملک میں لوگ گلیوں میں خوشی منانے کیلیے جمع ہوے. جھنڈیاں لگائی گئیں اور راشن جمع کر کے گلیوں محلوں میں جشن منائے گئے
